PROGRAM

Nancy Friebel, treasurer of the Altrusa Club of Green Bay, told members about Altrusa House at 1116 East Mason St..

The 12-bedroom, 10-bath home opened in 2001 to serve out-of-town families and patients who use a local hospital and need overnight accommodations while they receive ongoing treatment. Nancy says the operating costs for the house run about $75,000 per year.

The house has 90% + occupancy throughout the year with stays from one night to as long as three months. The most popular area served by the house is the Upper Peninsula. More than 300 U.P. guest were served in 2007. Over the years, guests have come from 29 of the 50 states, plus El Salvador, Ireland and Japan.

The house does not charge guests to stay and relies on community support and private donations.
