Rotary International vice president Mike McGovern spoke to our meeting on March 10.

He detailed Rotary's resurgent effort to eradicate polio. He said when Rotary's Polio Plus began, 350,000 people still had the paralyzing disease. Now, he says the number is 1,000 in four countries. In terms of dollars and lives, he said 500,000 people are not crippled because of the $600 million Rotary program. He reminded Rotarians that Rotary's contribution is part of a $4 billion international program involving national governments and international aid agencies like the United Nations.

McGovern, now one of the key leaders of Rotary International, has been a Rotarian since 1986 and has served as a district governor, training leader, task force member, committee chair, and Council on Legislation representative. He has been the town manager of Cape Elizabeth, Maine since 1985.

McGovern came to northeast Wisconsin to participate in the President-elect Training Seminar and he also accepted an invitation from his cousin, Dr. Skip McGovern to speak to the Green Bay club.

"We're delighted Mike is taking the time to share his Rotary insights and experiences with us,"said Green Bay club president Bob Hieronimczak.
